When Federal Marshall Raylan Givens squares off against a known offender, he'll warn the man, "If I have to pull my gun I'll shoot to kill." Except this time he finds the offender naked in a bathtub, doped up and missing his kidneys.

Raylan knows there's big money in body parts, but by the time he finds out who's making the cuts, he's lying naked in a bathtub himself, Layla, the cool transplant nurse, about to go for his kidneys.

It turns out all the bad guys Raylan is after are girls this time: the nurse who collects kidneys and sells them for ten grand apiece; Carol Conlan, the mine company executive who comes to Harlan County to sell mountaintop removal, shoots a miner who wastes her time, then meets the miner's widow in a scene you won't forget.

The third girl's only offense is missing a court date. Jackie Nevada plays high-stakes poker for a living and is last seen in the shower with Raylan.

Dark and droll, Raylan is pure Elmore Leonard—a page-turner filled with natural-sounding dialogue and sly suspense, the hallmarks of this modern master.

MWA Grand Master Leonard’s fast-paced, darkly humorous third crime novel starring straight-shooting, supercool U.S. marshal Raylan Givens (after 1995’s Riding the Rap) pits Givens, a former coal miner from Harlan County, Ky., against three very different female crooks—a transplant nurse illegally harvesting organs, a viperous coal company vice president, and a poker-playing Butler University coed, who may or may not be robbing banks to support her habit. The author’s trademark witty dialogue and adeptness at developing quirky, memorable characters overshadows the novel’s plot, which reads like a series of interconnected short stories. For example, the plights of perpetually stoned dope dealers Dickie and Coover Crowe; their infamous father, Pervis “Speed” Crowe; and out-of-work miner Otis Culpepper serve to highlight the economic issues affecting Kentucky coal country. Readers will want to see more of the endearing Givens, the focal character of Justified, the popular FX TV series that starts its third season in early 2012. Agent: Jeff Posternak, the Andrew Wylie Agency.

Leonard's Stetson-wearing U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens has been demoted to rural Kentucky, but that doesn't reduce the killing and excitement that always seem to swirl around him. Narrator Brian D'Arcy James expertly voices a broad range of characters. While the listener has some difficulty in discriminating between blacks and whites (especially females) in the Southern drawls, it's a minor problem. James also enhances Leonard's famously pithy dialogue with perfect pacing and timing. The TV series "Justified" is based on the Raylan Givens character. M.C. (c) AudioFile 2012, Portland, Maine

The continued commercial success of the FX television series Justified has created a large fan base for Leonard’s gritty crime stories featuring U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens. Given audiences’ strong attachment to the actor who portrays Givens on television, narrator Brian D’Arcy James faces an uphill battle in this audio edition. However, James proves more than equal to the task, creating convincing Southern accents and distinct character voices. In Harlan County, Ky., the Crowe brothers are career drug dealers who’ve moved up to selling human organs for transplant on the black market. Naturally, the only man who can stop them is Givens. James’s performance is not to be missed: his range of dialects and personalities is so impressive that listeners may think this audio features a full cast. A HarperCollins paperback.
