The Deavys

A decidedly non-Ordinary family (and their talking cat) must embark on a magical mission in this tale from New York Times–bestselling author Alan Dean Foster.
For any normal teenage boy, having two and a half younger sisters would be enough to deal with. But Simwan Deavy’s life isn’t normal. His family is non-Ord—short for “non-Ordinary”—which means that at school, he and his sisters learn hexing and enchanting along with history and math. It also means they have a ghost for an uncle and a cat who talks. Still, everything is going well for Simwan—until a bottle of Truth is stolen from the local pharmacy. Now the Deavys’ favorite woods are under threat from development; their mother, whose life depends on the Truth, is growing weaker; and the world as they know it might never be the same.

With the help of their cat, Pithfwid, the Deavys track the loathsome, horrible Crub to his lair in New York City. But the Crub has laid traps, turning a dangerous city into a deadly one. To succeed at their mission, the Deavys will have to stick together—or the Truth may be lost forever.

In this charming adventure, four siblings tackle the magical menaces of New York City in order to retrieve a stolen artifact. Sixteen-year-old Simwan Deavy; his 12-year-old sisters, Amber, Rose, and N/Ice (sometimes she’s ice, sometimes she’s nice); and their ever-present talking cat Pithfwid set out on an epic quest after the rat king known as the Crub steals a bottle housing the Truth from its hiding place in their Pennsylvania hometown. As they attempt to get the bottle back, they use their wits and spells to survive deadly traps, ravenous ogres, and other hazards of the big city. Foster (the Pip and Flinx series) creates a Potteresque world of hidden magic, where secret streets harbor mythical creatures, and the “non-Ordinary” community traffics in curious cuisine (such as roast jackalope sandwiches). There’s an element of wordplay and punnery as well—a dragon is accused of being “the wyrm in the Big Apple”—which dances between whimsical and groan-inducing. Still, it’s an imaginative romp through an entertaining world. Ages 9–up. Agent: Vaughne Lee Hansen, Virginia Kidd Literary Agency.

Grades 10-1 A bottle of Truth has been stolen. For years, it sat on the shelf of Mr. Gemimmel's drugstore, safe and untouched by Ordinary humans, or even non-Ordinary (read: magical) ones. Now it's up to Simwan Deavy and his two-and-a-half sisters, all of whom study magic in school, to find it and return it to safety. The stakes are hightheir mother needs the bottle to surviveand their journey is made harder by the chaotic abilities of N/Ice, the sister who's only half there. The siblings track the thief, the king of rats, called the Crub, to New York, and then, ably assisted by their dead uncle and a talking cat, Pithfwid, they're off to find the Truth, save their mother, and rescue their village of Clearsight from Ordinary destruction. Foster, who writes science fiction and fantasy for both adults and YAs, straddles the line in this wacky magical adventure, and The Deavys has a distinct new adult feelalbeit a slightly madcap one.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2016, American Library Association.)
